News for Tuesday March 16th, 2010

Heres a look at your news for Tuesday March 16th, 2010

Two men were hit by a vehicle while they were repairing a guardrail yesterday morning in Collinsville Texas. The driver apparently blacked out or lost control, and struck a guardrail. And after he struck the guard rail hi hit a Texas Department of Transportation employee and contractor who were working on the guard rail. 68yr old William Duty, a contractor, and Texas DOT crewman, 50yr old Johnny Vick, were repairing a guardrail on the side of the road, when Whisenant drove past the flaggers and hit the men. The elderly driver was on several prescription drugs, but investigators are waiting on a toxicology report to see exactly what caused the accident. The two workers were flown by helicopter to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas. They did suffer severe injuries, but are expected to recover. The driver was taken by ambulance to Texoma Medical Center.

A Dallas-area man has been sentenced to 17 and a half yrs in prison and ordered to repay nearly $18 million after pleading guilty to fraud in an oil and natural gas drilling scheme. U.S. Attorney John Bales said Monday, that 50yr old Michael Eugene Dannelly of Denton was sentenced in federal court last week on a charge of mail fraud. Authorities believe that Dannelly tricked investors out of nearly $17.7 Million that they thought was being used to drill oil and natural gas wells in Texas and Oklahoma. Instead, Dannelly used the money for personal expenses, including $5.3 Million on gambling at two Louisiana casinos. Dannelly pleaded guilty in August, four months after he was indicted.

Howe, Tom Bean and Van Alstyne Fire crews all battled a house fire at 103 Young Street at the corner of Young and Branch in Howe last night. The flames broke out around 4pm when the homeowner was at a softball game. No one was home at the time of the fire, and no one was hurt, but a couple of pet birds died in the blaze. The fire Marshall says the fire started in the kitchen near the stove, but no official cause has been determined yet. There was heavy smoke damage inside the house, but the fire Marshall thinks it will be salvageable. The homeowner is receiving help from the American Red Cross.
